United Nations
Security Council (UNSC)
The situation
in Western Sahara
Since the Western Sahara
territory was claimed by the Polisario Front (the Sahrawi National Liberation
Movement manifestation on the matter) in 1976, even being controlled at the
time by a joint administration by Morocco and Mauritania, and specially after
Mauritania withdrew in 1979, there has been conflict between the
Polisario-proclaimed Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) and Morocco to
decide which state should be the Western Sahara administrator. The
international average of the foreign policies regarding the issue is neutral.
Both parties have significant international recognition, which makes this issue
a great matter of importance, taking development, UN Missions, migration and
refugees high concerns.
The United Nations Security
Council is the most active committee on this organisation, being competent for
deliberating on any question relevant to the UN, for the creation of agencies
and programs, and for taking effective measures in order to solve international
needs and guarantee global security. In the upcoming sessions, the Security
Council will follow the Western Sahara agenda.
